Why Your Oversized Los Angeles Garage Feels Impossible to Declutter (And How to Fix It)
When I was a kid, my mom made me an offer I couldn’t refuse:
💬 “If you can do the splits, I’ll buy you ANYTHING you want.”
Now, my mom never bought anything, let alone anything I wanted, so I was determined.
I tried once.
I tried twice.
I tried three times...
And then I gave up.
Little Sona didn’t know that just because I couldn’t do something, didn’t mean I couldn’t learn to do it.
Fast forward to today: I’m 41, still as inflexible as ever—or at least, I was.
Three weeks ago, I started doing gentle yoga every day. When I started, I couldn’t bend beyond 90 degrees. Now? I can touch my toes! And for the first time, I actually believe that one day I’ll be able to do the splits.
That’s the power of taking small, consistent daily steps. It builds momentum and gives you confidence. Plus, of course, it moves you closer to your goal!
So why am I telling you this?
Because a lot of you approach decluttering—especially your garage—the same way I approached the splits as a kid.
You try once.
You try twice.
You get overwhelmed and give up.
But what if, instead, you approached it like 41-year-old me working on my flexibility? Small, consistent, daily steps to build your confidence and momentum!
Three Simple Things You Can Do to Transform Your Garage Before the Year Ends:
1️⃣ Spend just 15 minutes a day getting rid of trash and things you wouldn’t even remember you had if they were lost in the devastating LA fires. I know they seem like something you might use one day, but if you haven’t needed it in the past year, you can live without it—or find a solution when/if you actually do. (After working with so many clients over the years, I can assure you, this almost never happens.)
2️⃣ Don’t bring anything new into the space unless you use it multiple times a week. (And if you “think” you need to keep something, ask yourself: Would I pay $100/month for a storage unit to store this? If not, it’s costing you money to keep it!) If you are not convinced, here's a blog I did on this very topic!
3️⃣ Make a habit of resetting the space at the end of each week. Pick a specific day—maybe Sunday—and spend 10-15 minutes putting things back where they belong. A quick reset keeps clutter from creeping back in.
And before you say, “But it’ll take too long…”—remember, the time will pass anyway. Better to make slow progress than stay stuck in the same overwhelming mess.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed and want a little extra guidance, I have a course that walks you through decluttering—not just your space, but everything in your life that doesn’t serve you. It’s designed to help you take small, doable steps without the stress. If that sounds like something you need, here are the details!
